This idea instantly caught my attention.
It adds whimsy and style in a way that using real moulding could not; you could interpret this idea to any style of moulding. Find inspiration in houses, buildings or retailers who specialize in wood trim and moulding like Dykes Lumber (dykeslumber.com).

Here I applied the technique in a older teen's room that is full of glam! We opted to keep the faux moulding light in color. The wall and ceiling were done in a pearlized paint. The room has such a personality and style unique to the girl that inhabits it (notice no pics were taken of the floor area!) and the moulding speaks to that.
I can think of so many places that this could work to bring in that unexpected element that I love so much. (Think basements, mudrooms, bathrooms- anyplace where the wood mouldings were an afterthought.)
But remember this trompe l'oeil effect is not for the uptight perfectionist; it is meant to be kept simple because it is a loose interpretation of the real thing.
Inspire yourself.
